Reconnect is an Early Intervention Youth Homelessness Prevention Program funded by the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services under the auspices of the Northern Rivers Social Development Council. Reconnect operates across the Northern Rivers with case managers located in the Clarence, Richmond Valley, Lismore, Ballina and Tweed. Reconnect case managers work directly with vulnerable and at risk young people (aged 12-18) who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, as well as their families. The Northern Rivers Reconnect client group priorities include ATSI Communities, low socio-economic and people with complex and multiple needs. Assistance provided may include individual or family counselling, coaching, mentoring, mediation, the development of community supports, referral to other services and use of brokerage funds for specialised services or practical needs. Reconnect  also offers a variety of groups.  Our Case Workers will outreach where necessary.
The service is flexible in supporting family reconciliation, access to accommodation, employment, education, training, life skills and personal development. The emphasis is on advocacy, empowerment and safety.   On average the service takes on about 200 new clients per year, as well as maintaining ongoing client relationships.
The Northern Rivers Social Development Council Reconnect Service has five Case Managers conveniently located in offices in Lismore, Tweed Heads, Ballina, Casino and Grafton.

Youth Homelessness Matters Day PDF Print E-mail

They may not immediately appear to be homeless, but those kids sleeping on a friend's couch "for a few nights" may not have any real alternative. They probably haven't left the family home for the fun of it. Many will be escaping domestic violence, neglect, parental drug or alcohol abuse, or child abuse. The Northern Rivers has the second highest number of homeless people in NSW, and nearly half of them are children or young adults.

In a local contribution to a national campaign aimed at raising public awareness of this problem, the Northern Rivers Social Development Council (NRSDC) held a Youth Homelessness Matters day at Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre on Wednesday April 18, alongside events happening at Tweed and Murwillumbah.LEC 19-04-2012 EGN 08 LEC190412Homeless t325

Northern Rivers Youth Census results released PDF Print E-mail

The results of a youth census conducted by the Northern Rivers Youth Advisory Council (YAC) have been released. While the findings of the local youth census were similar to the results of Mission Australia’s national youth census, there were some marked differences. Although young people in this region also ranked body image and coping with stress as their top two concerns, local youth ranked the environment as their third highest issue of concern.

The Northern Rivers Youth Census was developed and conducted by the Northern Rivers YAC from September 28 – October 29, 2011, with support and facilitation from the Northern Rivers Social Development Council. Findings of the Youth Census were collated and analysed from November to January 2012, and are included in full in this report. Key findings from the report are listed below.
