Reconnect

Reconnect is an Early Intervention Youth Homelessness Prevention Program funded by the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services under the auspices of the Northern Rivers Social Development Council. Covering the Northern Rivers Region from Tweed to Grafton, the service is aimed at 12 – 18 year old young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and their families.

Assistance provided may include individual or family counselling, coaching, mentoring, mediation, the development of community supports, referral to other services and use of brokerage funds for specialised services or practical needs. Reconnect  also offers a variety of groups.  Our Case Workers will outreach where necessary.

The service is flexible in supporting family reconciliation, access to accommodation, employment, education, training, life skills and personal development. The emphasis is on advocacy, empowerment and safety.   On average the service takes on about 200 new clients per year, as well as maintaining ongoing client relationships.

The Northern Rivers Social Development Council Reconnect Service has five Case Managers conveniently located in offices in Lismore, Tweed Heads, Ballina, Casino and Grafton.


Getting it Together

Aims to help young people find opportunities for positive change in their life by:

  • the creation of ongoing positive family and community relationships
  • Building self esteem , personal growth and life skills
  • Addressing personal issues and health problems
  • Education on the impacts of alcohol and other drugs (AoD)
  • Promoting harm minimisation and AoD misuse reduction
  • Connecting young people to specialist services where appropriate

Those eligible for the Getting it Together program are 12 - 18 year olds with Alcohol and/or other drug misuse or abuse issues and people who want information about Alcohol and or other Drugs.

The Department of Human Services together with the Department of Premier and Cabinet has engaged KPMG to develop a long term plan to build the capacity of the non-government sector and develop the child and family workforce to deliver on the NSW Government’s commitments under Keep them Safe (KTS).   As part of the project, KPMG is conducting a series of consultations with stakeholders to draw upon your views and experience in relation to the areas of focus to inform the further development of the Plan.  The consultations include three different formats for you to contribute:

  1. participation in one of the workshops set out below
  2. a short online questionnaire
  3. opportunity for direct email response to the discussion paper by emailing

National survey of young Australians - Homelessness and out-of-home care PDF Print E-mail

In 2008, over 45,000 young people aged 11 to 24 years participated in the seventh annual Mission Australia National survey of young Australians. 375 of them identified as homeless or living in insecure housing and a further 135 were living in foster care. This publication provides an overview of youth homelessness and out-of-home care in Australia; compares the survey responses of these two groups with young people in ‘other’ living arrangements; profiles a service, Lemongrove Lodge, which is working effectively with homeless young people; and makes policy recommendations regarding young people who are homeless or in out-of-home care.

Getting it Together, funded by the NSW Department of Community Service's Alcohol and other Drugs program,  aims to help young people from 12 to 18 who are engaged in the use or abuse of Alcohol and/or other Drugs in the Byron, Ballina, Lismore, Casino and Kyogle Local Government areas.
