Mental Health Issues Affecting Older People.

The first training day gave an overview of various mental health disorders that can impact on older people and their carers.

The impact of disorders such as depression, anxiety and psychiatric problems were briefly outlined and some treatment options for these were presented.

Participants were given basic training in the use of screening tools to screen for mood disorders and anxiety and appropriate referral pathways for clients or carers who may present with problems were outlined.

Part 2 will

  • outline mental health disorders in more depth and outline the difficulties that can be encountered when trying to distinguish between depression, delirium and dementia.
  • There will also be a basic introduction looking at interview techniques for depression.

This training day builds on the initial session and it is expected that participants will have attended the first training day as a pre requisite.

Course Outline:
 Mental health issues are a key consideration for both Older People and their carers.  This course will outline the key mental health problems facing Older People with medical and physical problems.  It will also focus on mental health issues that can impact on carers of Older People.  Issues such as depression, anxiety disorders and psychiatric problems will be discussed, as well as ways for HACC workers to identify possible problems and how to deal with them.

 Key subject areas covered:
Mental health for Older People, screening tools to assess mental health and carer stress and associated problems.

Participant Learning Outcomes:
Participants will develop a knowledge of the presentation of major mental health problems, the issues affecting both their clients and their carers and practical methods for screening such problems and referral pathways so that these can be addressed.

The target group for this course is:
Community Care Workers: Managers, coordinators, direct care staff, volunteers
