Northern Rivers Buslines and Ballina Buslines have capped their fares at $9.40 as of January 2012. This will make a significant difference to the hip pocket of people who travel on longer distance rural routes. We at NRSDC were very pleased to hear this news, as the high price of rural and regional bus fares has been an issue we have been campaigning long and hard about. In fact, Buslines have said that one of the reasons they made this move was because NRSDC had pointed out that high fares were a barrier to people on limited incomes being able to catch the bus. As we know transport is a means to an end, so being able to afford to catch the bus can mean the difference between being able to receive medical treatment, attend training, play sports and generally participate in community life, or not. A one way, full fare ticket from Ballina to Lismore has been reduced by $2.40, Evans Head to Ballina reduced by $4.60 and Kyogle to Lismore reduced by a huge $6.80. We wholeheartedly congratulate Buslines on this initiative which is a step towards making the Northern Rivers a more socially inclusive community. |
