Northern Rivers Social Development Council has a dedicated transport development position, through which we work in collaboration with other organisations to improve transport options for communities in the Northern Rivers. Our Transport Position Statement sets out the future we would like to see for our communities, the value of good transport provision and what we are currently doing to progress forward with transport issues in our region.
Access to transport is one of the highest social priorities for the Northern Rivers region. Public transport options here are limited, inflexible and costly by comparison to metropolitan public transport services; this has contributed to an over-reliance on private vehicles. Ongoing rising fuel costs place a real burden on communities without an affordable public transport system. Residents on lower incomes including students, unemployed people, sole parents, Aboriginal and older people, experience significant transport disadvantage. This may hinder their access to education, employment, training, health services, sport, support groups, social and cultural activities. There are significant flow-on effects of this throughout people’s lives including social exclusion, ill health and entrenched disadvantage.
Through NRSDC’s work in addressing local transport issues, we hope to alleviate these effects and disadvantages and create a better community for all to live in.litan public transport services; this has contributed to an over-reliance on private vehicles.
