Lack of housing options, housing affordability and homelessness are significant and growing issues in our region.  The Northern Rivers Housing Forum has been established to highlight housing issues and needs, identify challenges, and determine innovative and sustainable approaches to address these issues across the region. This regional forum also allows for ongoing discussion and dissemination of relevant information amongst key stakeholders, provides opportunity for partnerships and collaboration as well as research and policy development.

The Affordable Housing Solutions forum was initiated by the Northern Rivers Social Development Council to facilitate the creation of new affordable housing on the North Coast of NSW. The forum was a two-day solutions based forum which took place on the 20 and 21 September 2005 at Byron Bay which brought together the private, government and community sectors to demonstrate ways to create new affordable housing options in our region.

115 delegates attended the forum, most from the North Coast region. NRSDC acknowledges the generous financial contribution from the Australian Government’s Sustainable Regions Programme as well as the NSW Governments North Coast Coordination Program.

A lot of information available on housing cost and levels of housing stress is published but it is difficult to find information that relates to smaller regions.  This summary of regional housing information includes data on housing costs, household income, housing stress and affordable housing availability for the seven Local Government Areas in our region.  For comparative purposes, the same information is included for Sydney and New South Wales. (‘Sydney’ refers to the Sydney Statistical Division and ‘Rest of NSW’ excludes the Sydney Statistical Division). The information is based primarily on 2006 Census data but also includes data from more recent records and surveys conducted by the Housing NSW and the Real Estate Institute.  The non-ABS data is updated quarterly.
