The closing date for applications to Queensland’s Redress Scheme has been extended to 30 September, 2008. The scheme was set up to provide ex gratia payments to people who experienced abuse and neglect as children in Queensland institutions. Former residents of institutions covered by the Forde Inquiry, who turned 18 on or before 31 December 1999, are eligible to apply. There are two levels of payment under the Redress Scheme. The first level payment is $7000. Those who feel they suffered more serious abuse, and who are confirmed as being eligible for a first level payment, may pursue a second level payment of up to $33,000. Priority in claims processing is given to those aged over seventy years and people with a medically diagnosed life-threatening illness. Information and application forms can be obtained by telephoning 1300 769 291. A full list of institutions covered by the scheme is available at the Queensland Department of Communities website. Acceptance of any money under the scheme involves signing a Deed of Release indemnifying the State from all legal claims. |
