New Support Program for Older Parent Carers PDF Print E-mail
Richmond Community Options has a new support coordination program for older parent carers of an adult son or daughter with a disability, who need information about community services and preparing for their child’s future needs.

The program aims to support older parent carers to maintain their caring role and strengthen their supports. It provides access to flexible respite options, links into formal and informal community support services, and facilitated carer support.

The program assists the family with future planning and emergency respite planning.

Judy Creagh is an older parent caring for her son Simon who has an intellectual disability. They have been on the program for six weeks. Speaking about the program, Judy said, “I’ve found the service to be very good. The information I have received has been very helpful. It has given me an insight into what help is available for people in a caring role”.

Eligibility criteria for the program includes: parents over 65 years who are caring for a son or daughter with a disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers aged 45 and over who are caring for a family member with a disability.
