Respite for Older Parent Carers provides a broad range of high quality, flexible, support responses tailored to meet the needs of older carers and their child with a disability. The service addresses the specialised needs of individuals with high support needs due to a profound or severe disability. The service works closely with other service providers, in particular those preferred by individuals and their carers, to deliver a well-coordinated response.

Services available are flexible and may include:
  • In home respite
  • Community access
  • Peer support
  • Camps
  • Weekend and holiday support
  • Emergency support

Geographical area
The local government areas of Ballina, Byron, Clarence Valley, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Tweed.

Eligibility
People with a profound or severe disability aged 25 years and over and their carers. To be eligible for a Carers Respite Package the older parent carer must be:
• Aged 60 and over
• Aged 50 and over for indigenous carers
• Receive a carer allowance
• Have provided care for a significant period of time.

Referrals
Families can make an independent referral or with approval, services can make a referral by telephoning Northcott’s Respite for Older Carers Service Coordinator. Once a referral has been received Northcott’s Respite for Older Carers Service Coordinator will gather information to establish eligibility.

Priority of access
Priority will be determined following an assessment of the llevel of support needs and the extent of existing support available to the individual and their carers. Highest priority for service will be given to carers aged over 65 years with a child over 40 years.

Cost
The level of fees form part of the Service Agreement and are reviewed as required. Fees are charged by Northcott at the rate of $2.50 per hour of service. Clients can receive 6-7 hours service per week or a total of 300 to 350 hours per year.

Funding
This service is funded by The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) and supported by Northcott Disability Services.
