The NRSDC has recently updated its housing data with the latest statistics from the Department of Housing Sales and Rent Report regarding housing costs across the state. Statistics show that outside of Sydney, the cost of rental properties in the Northern Rivers Region is the highest in NSW. The median cost of a three bedroom rental house in Lismore is $300; $280 in Clarence Valley; $420 in Byron; $385 in Tweed and $380 in Ballina. In the last six months, there has also been little change in rental costs. The Australian Property Monitor explains the halt in rising costs in Tweed, Ballina and Byron areas as a rental ‘ceiling’ whereby local renters simply cannot meet housing costs and have to seek housing elsewhere. Changes in the number of new bonds lodged indicates that tenants are moving out of coastal areas and into inland areas.
