A report from the NRMA claims that public transport is unsuitable for older people and that it is a myth that they can use it when they limit or stop driving. It highlights the very high growth in the number of older people in coastal regions such as the Richmond/Tweed and the South East. The NRMA suggests that by next year the NSW Government should develop and implement a transport and mobility plan for an ageing population. The plan calls for the transport and mobility needs of older people be taken into account in all new and existing transport infrastructure projects and that all cabinet minutes relating to transport infrastructure and service delivery include an ageing impact statement. The plan also calls for a regional component to ensure that all forms of transport and mobility are integrated at a regional level. The authors propose that the plan must be a whole of government strategy with a review undertaken every three years with published performance results. The report does not mention community transport but does commend shuttle bus services and refers to Council minibuses in Balmain which are actually operated by Leichhardt Community Transport Group.
