Brief description:
The Mental Health First Aid course is a 12 hour (2 day) award winning, researched based program designed to increase the level of mental health literacy in members of the community. The Mental Health First Aid program teaches participants how to respond to mental health crisis situations and early stages of mental health problems.
The 2nd edition Standard Mental Health First Aid program is more comprehensive and has a number of improvements over the 1st edition, the major improvement being the development of a new manual based on the Mental Health First Aid Guidelines. These guidelines were developed using the consensus of an expert panel of mental health consumers, carers and professionals from developed English speaking countries.
The developing mental illnesses covered include:
- depression,
- anxiety,
- psychosis and
- substance misuse.
The mental health crises covered are:
- suicidal thoughts and behaviours,
- nonsuicidal self-injury,
- panic attacks,
- traumatic event,
- severe psychotic state,
- acute effects from alcohol or other drug misuse and
- aggressive behaviour.
The giving of mental health first aid is most relevant in situations when it is first becoming apparent to others that a person in their family, social or professional network is developing a mental health problem. However, the course may also provide some useful information on how to assist a person who has a history of a mental illness or longer term mental health problems.
This course is aimed at: The program is designed for members of the public, carers & service providers to learn how to assist someone who is developing a mental illness or is in a mental health crisis.
