The facts about mental health
About 20% of adult Australians or one in five people will suffer some form of a mental
disorder at some stage in their life. Many people will live with more than one mental
illness at a time, such as anxiety and depression, which commonly occur together.
Every year a further 20 000 Australians are found to have a mental illness. In summary:
- Three million Australians will experience a major depressive illness during their lifetime;
- 5% of Australians experience anxiety so crippling that is affects every aspect of
their lives; - About 3 per cent of Australians will experience a psychotic illness such as
schizophrenia during their lifetime
The 2nd edition Mental Health First Aid has a number of improvements over the 1st
edition, the major improvement being the development of a new manual based on the
Mental Health First Aid Guidelines. These guidelines were developed using the
consensus of an expert panel of mental health consumers, carers and professionals
from developed English speaking countries
The course covers the mental health crisis situations of:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Psychosis
- Substance misuse
Mental health crises covered:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non suicidal self injury
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe psychotic states
- Acute effects from alcohol or other drug misuse
- Aggressive behaviours
It is recommended that Mental Health First Aid training becomes a prerequisite people
working in the community services sector including aged and disability services, family
and youth services, women’s refuges and mental health services.
Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where
nd how to get help and what sort of help.
Mental Health First Aid training can assist in early intervention and in the on-going
ommunity support of people with mental illnesses. It is useful for people employed in are
as which involve increased contact with mental health issues and for carers of people
with mental illnesses.
