For an Introductory Audience

Working in the caring professions can pose unique challenges, particularly when
delivering services in a client's home environment or in community settings.

The laws and expectations that apply to workplaces are very different to those that
apply in private, personal or home life. So what happens when one person's workplace
is another person's home life?

And what of the emotional context of community care? What can happen when clients
and families can come to view front line workers as "part of the family"? Or when a
worker’s compassion can lead them to become over-involved or enmeshed?

This course draws on the dozens of workshops and training sessions that Jenny Bray has
conducted with hundreds of staff members across NSW from a variety of community
care settings.

Using a range of case studies, this course explores the most common 'boundary
problems' that staff consistently experience on a daily basis in the community care industry.

Importantly, the course explores specific strategies to deal with inter-personal
boundaries,and research based management strategies to assist organisations to
support staff and volunteers.

Key subject areas covered:

  • Types of situations that often lead to boundary problems.
  • Effects of crossing boundaries.
  • Strategies to avoid boundary problems.
  • Emotional work and emotional competency.
  • Management issues relating to workplace boundaries.

Participant Learning Outcomes:

  1. Define what is meant by ‘professional boundaries’ in community care;
  2. Identify areas of concern that can lead to boundary problems;
  3. Describe the effects boundary problems can have on clients and workers;
  4. Identify strategies to avoid boundary problems;
  5. Participate in a consultation process for developing boundary policies.

The target group for this course is: All staff, from front line to managers
