From the President - Two 'Do Not Miss' Opportunities

June is usually a hectic time for most organisations as the final touches are put to budgets for the coming financial year but there are two special opportunities that I draw your attention to for prompt action. The first- a survey into the administration of NSW Government grants closes on Friday June 6 while the forum on homelessness on June 16 is a great opportunity and needs to be booked ASAP. Don’t let these two pass you by.

Complex Needs Conference

NRSDC Complex Needs – Turning the tide Conference is being held at the Mantra at Salt Beach in the beautiful; sub tropical Northern New South Wales at Kingscliff. The conference aims to provide a showcase of programs and projects aimed at developing the service system; a forum for discussion on policy, government trends, service system issues; a prime source of information on new research findings and scans for the future; and an avenue to find solutions for the region.

Partnerships In Health - Call For Papers

This year the North Coast Area Health Advisory Council is keen to broaden this annual Conference to include Clinical Engagement and to highlight successful Health Partnerships. The theme is “Partnerships in Health” - Community and Clinical Engagement. It is the Third Annual Conference and is being held on the 12-13 September 2008 at the Coraki Conference Centre.

Federal Government Green Paper on Homelessness

The Federal Government’s Green Paper on Homelessness ‘Which Way Home?’ was released by the Prime Minister Mr Rudd on 22 May. It was developed by an expert steering group comprising Tony Nicholson, Executive Director of the Brotherhood of St Lawrence (chair), Heather Nancarrow, Director of the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence, and Anna Buduls, a Sydney company director and philanthropist.

A Focus On Homelessness In Our Region

Northern Rivers Social Development Council welcomes the release of the Federal Government’s Green Paper on Homelessness. NRSDC President, Jenny Dowell agrees that it is unacceptable that after such a long period of economic growth, the number of people who are homeless continues to grow.

Northern Rivers Social Development Council (NRSDC) congratulates Clarence Valley Council for their decision to partner with North Coast Community Housing Company to establish an affordable housing development proposal. As Mr Tony Davies, CEO of NRSDC, points out, “local government is in a position to fully understand the social and economic impacts of insufficient and unaffordable housing”.

Abuse of Older Adults Prevention

The Abuse of Older Adults Prevention Training program has been developed by the Northern Rivers Abuse of Older Adults Prevention Project, Northern Rivers Social Development Council (NRSDC), funded by the National Community Crime Prevention Programme, an Australian Government Initiative. The program is the result of extensive 2 year consultation with service providers working within the aged care sector, and is based on a comprehensive interagency training manual that was developed as part of this process.
