Dear [FIRSTNAME],
Abuse of Older Adults Prevention Program (AOAPP)
Have you have seen the new TV advertisement by NRSDC to promote community awareness of Abuse of Older Adults? When most people think of abuse of our older people, they visualise bruises and broken bones but research locally and elsewhere indicates that financial abuse is far more common.
The AOAPP aims to raise community understanding of the range of abuse and to empower those who work with older people to recognise the signs and know what steps that they can take to prevent further abuse. The advertisement is only part of the program- the Manual that is available for $50 from NRSDC is a ‘must-have’ for any-one who works with older people. I encourage you to contact NRSDC to secure your copy.NAIDOC weekThe original name for Abuse of Older Adults was Elder Abuse and although that term is still used by some organisations, NRSDC has opted for a more appropriate terminology. When we first used Elder Abuse, many people, including a Federal politician who handed over the initial funding cheque, assumed we were talking about abuse of Aboriginal Elders. The Aboriginal community has a tradition of revering its Elders and sets a fine example for non-indigenous Australians. Of course this is not to say abuse of older adults does not happen in Aboriginal communities or in the wide range of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. Abuse of older adults occurs across the community and its incidence is likely to increase as the number of older people increases.
The opportunity to reflect on traditional relationships with our older citizens is especially relevant as we approach NAIDOC week. From July 6 to July 13, wherever we are in the Northern Rivers, let us all celebrate this special week and take time to reflect on the continuing role of the Bundjalung Elders in our communities. In doing so, we can also offer them our support and respect.
