Northern Rivers Housing Forum - May 19 Ballina
The next Northern Rivers Housing Forum will be held on 19 May 2010, 9am - 3.30pm at the Richmond Room, 5 Regatta Avenue Ballina. These are interesting times with affordable housing and homelessness featuring prominently on national, state and regional agendas and much is happening to address these issues.   If you would like to find out more about what is happening in housing in the Northern Rivers please come along to the forum.  As well as guest speakers on topical issues, there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and network with other service providers.  The event is free of charge, but you must register your attendance by contacting Kate on 6620 1820 or email info@nrsdc.org.au, by 10 May for catering purposes. You will find a draft agenda below.

Mens Health Week - Grafton Event

ACOSS Call on Henry to Overhaul Income Support and Introduce One Payment Rate
ACOSS is calling for the introduction of a single base payment rate for all people of working age on income support to fix problems in the current system where some people are paid $120 per week less than others.

SCU Seeks Pregnant Women to Help Educate the Midwives of the Future
Southern Cross University is seeking women from the Gold Coast to Port Macquarie to link with Bachelor of Midwifery students, who will accompany them through their pregnancy and birth.  Midwifery students based at the University's Lakeside campus in Tweed Heads are currently being matched with women who have been pregnant for 35 weeks or less to learn with in a supportive role at antenatal and postnatal appointments, as well as at the labour and birth if the woman permits.

National Disability Services (NDS) NSW has organised a statewide program of Good Governance regional forums for CEO’S or senior managers, and voluntary board or management committee members of all ADHC funded organisations.  Forums will be held on the following topics: Governance (and legal issues), financial management (sessions on pre and post end of financial year), business planning and strategy, and quality and performance management.

TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment - Free Training for Indigenous People
This certificate course run by Alstonville Ballina Community College, has been specifically designed (and funded) to provide skills for Indigenous Australians to empower others through skills transference and vocational training delivery.   The course begins 13 May 2010 with students attending two days a week for seven weeks.

All Community Services funded NGOs are invited to attend Child Protection Dynamics Training will be held in Ballina over three days 26-28 May 2010, from 9.00am to 4.30pm.  Prerequisite to Training: You must have completed the Identifying & Responding to Risk of Harm training prior to attending this training.  This training does not replace (Mandatory Reporting) Identifying & Responding to Children & Young People at Risk of Harm training.

From 27 April 2010, a new housing application system called Housing Pathways will make it easier for people applying for housing assistance from the NSW Government.  Housing NSW together with 27 community housing providers and the Aboriginal Housing Office have set up a single housing application system called Housing Pathways.

Information Sessions for Homelessness Action Plan - Early Intervention Case Management Support
A new program of Early Intervention Case Management Support, is to be run by On Track as part of the Homelessness Action Plan (HAP).  It will be available to families with accompanying children who are at risk of losing their tenancies.  Information sessions about the new program will be held across the Northern Rivers, in Tweed, Lismore and Grafton during May.

Planning the Future of Not-for-Profit Housing Providers - Media Relase from Tanya Plibersek MP
The Australian Government today released its discussion paper on the community housing sector, Regulation and Growth of the not-for-profit housing sector.  The paper marks the start of a public consultation process about options for regulation and growth of not-for-profit housing providers in Australia, looking at ways that can better support and sustain this growing sector.

NCOSS advises that the draft Recommendations Report on the NSW Health review of the Health NGO Grants Program has been finalised and is currently the subject of internal review by NSW Health.  The report was released for limited consultation with stakeholders, including the NGO Review Reference Group at the end of 2009.
