As social justice is at the heart of the community sector, we'd like to take the opportunity on World Social Justice Day (February 20) to reflect upon and to celebrate the amazing work being done in our region to support individuals, families and communities. In this Social Justice edition of the NRSDC newsletter we showcase some local initiatives by members of the Northern Rivers community sector who work passionately and diligently towards the goal of social justice.
What exactly is social justice? Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.
In our local region, with its diverse mix of people, we encourage everyone to work toward making this place a better, fairer, safer and more accessible place for us all to live.
February 20 has been chosen as World Social Justice Day by the United Nations General Assembly to encourage people to look at how social justice affects poverty eradication and focus on the goal of achieving full employment and support for social integration.
"Let us work together to balance the global economy and build a new social contract for the 21st century. Let us chart a development path that leads to greater social justice and the future we want."
