Byron Shire Disability Access and Inclusion Plan Adopted PDF Print E-mail
Byron Shire Council has adopted the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2008-2013. The Plan has been compiled in consultation with the Council’s Access Committee, community stakeholders and Council officers who will have responsibility for delivering key actions.
Council is committed to providing an environment where people of all ages and circumstances are valued and independent. Developing a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan will assist Council in providing more accessible services and facilities in a considered way. It will enable resources to be used in the most important areas first and will ensure other matters are prioritised to be addressed in the future.

An Implementation Plan has been developed to incorporate issues raised during the 2006/2007 consultation process. Key actions of the Plan as it rolls out over the next five years are to:
  • complete an audit of Council buildings and public toilets and prioritise improvements according to key locations
  • continue to improve pathways and pedestrian crossings
  • encourage the application of adaptable housing principles in the new DCP and to educate and inform builders and developers of relevant legislation and standards
  • ensure information is provided in alternate formats and community meeting venues are accessible to all
  • provide an ongoing commitment to training for Council staff to improve the accessibility of Council services to the community and to work towards principles of Universal Access and Design in the future
